The author argues that traditional ethical philosophy has failed to adequately address these issues because it relies too heavily on an intellectualistic bias and an incomplete understanding of human nature. Taking an organic approach that views the human being as a whole, rather than a collection of separate faculties, the author posits that man is fundamentally a reactive being. Human conduct, therefore, should be understood as a product of both cognitive and reactive processes. The author presents evidence to suggest that emotion is an ultimate aspect of consciousness, irreducible to either cognition or pleasure and pain. The text argues that emotion must be recognized as having a unique influence on conduct and cannot be explained solely in terms of hedonic principles. The author concludes by asserting that a fuller appreciation of the role of emotion can lead to a more comprehensive understanding of human nature and provide a sounder basis for ethical decision-making.
