This book explores the main problems presented by the Pentateuch, a collection of biblical texts foundational to both Judaism and Christianity. The author offers solutions or suggestions towards solutions compatible with Catholic doctrine. It is not always possible to find a solution that can be called certain, but it is enough that there should always be reasonably certain grounds for accepting the Church's teaching, and that her teaching should declare divine truth and be a safeguard against error. This little work, therefore, in no way claims to exhaust the possibilities of the faith that seeks to understand, but will be enough if it helps to promote a better knowledge.

I rish Ecclesiastical Record, and are here reproduced by kind permission of the publishers, Messrs. Browne Nolan, Ltd. They represent an effort to state the main problems presented by the Pentateuch, literary, historical, scientific and religious; and to offer solutions, or at least suggestions towards solution, compatible with Catholic doctrine. It is not always possible to find a solution that can be called certain, nor has Almighty God promised His Church that one should always be forthcoming; it is enough that there should always be reasonably certain grounds for accepting her teaching, and that her teaching should declare divine truth and be a safeguard against error. This little work, therefore, in no way claims to exhaust the possibilities of the faith that seeks to understand, fides quaerens intellectum; it will be enough if it helps but a little to promote that better knowledge, to encourage Catholic scholars to master the evidence and attempt a wider and deeper reconciliation, to persuade all Christians that truth can never clash with truth. C. L. For the purposes of this Edition, some Editorial Notes have been added at the end of the Essays. N.B. I-II Kings in the Douay Version are I-II Samuel in the Revised Version, III-IV Kings are I-II Kings, I-II Paralipomenon are I-II Chronicles.
