This book explores the history of British Freemasonry, tracing its origins and development through the study of ancient Scottish lodge records, some dating back to the 16th century. The collected evidence challenges long held and popularly accepted assumptions about the order's history. The author argues that the Grand Lodges are the direct descendants by continuity and absorption of much older Freemasonry, which can be traced back nearly three hundred years before the establishment of these institutions. Further challenging conventional thinking, they suggest that while speculative Masonry is traditionally held to have emerged in the second decade of the 18th century, its roots in fact lie much earlier, with the records providing ample evidence of speculative involvement. Significantly, this reassessment of Freemasonry's history has been made possible through the collection and recent publication of these fascinating and invaluable documents, which while long in existence, have until now remained largely unexamined. Ultimately, this work reframes our understanding of Freemasonry's historical trajectory and offers a more nuanced appreciation of its actual evolution.
