June 4fJ), 1907. TO THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE. Gentlemen, I am pleased to be able to report that after meeting with a number of difficulties, and after spending much time and trouble on the subject, the National Physical Laboratory has now felt justified in pubhshing some prehminary results of the investigations into the specific heat of steam. A new apparatus will, however, now be installed, with which it is hoped to obtain additional results with more rapidity and certainty than at present. The investigation has been attempted by several physicists, both British and Continental, but the results differ from each other both as regards the actual values and as regards the changes of specific heat with change of pressure and of temperature. Thus some experimenters claim that the specific heat rises and faUs with the two factors, and others claim the reverse effects. As yet the National Physical Laboratory has only dealt with steam of 4-3 atmospheres (631bs. per square inch) pressure. As can be shown from the following table, the specific heat starts at the saturation point with a value of 0532 and sinks at first very rapidly with rising temperature and then more slowly. This is also the tendency with one set of experiments by Messrs. Knoblauch and Jakob, of Munich, for wliich reason their results, which extend to 8atmospheres (1201bs. per square inch), and to 356 C. (673 Fah.) are appended. They may give some indication as to specific heats which have not yet been dealt with here. A pparently, according to their experiments, the specific heat at saturation temperature rises about 0-015 per rise of 1atmosphere, whereas at 300 C. (572 Fah.) the specific heat seems to be almost independent of the temperature, viz., 049. It is doubtful whether this latter result will be confirmed by further exeriments, for, assuming that the results obtained by the National Physical
