This book is intended for use not only as a general Service Book, but also as a companion book to the Cathedral Psalter. (the new edition of It contains all the music necessary for choral purposes, excepting the psalter, anthems, and hymns. A careful selection of single and double chants for the Canticles will be found, adapted to the pointing set forth by the General Convention. The editor Wishes to call special attention to Nos. 2 and 3, Of the Rules for Chanting, on page 29. These rules are taken from the Preface to the Cathedral Psalter, and if they are strictly Observed, the chanting will be smooth and ?owing, without the disjointed effect so often heard in choirs. A great change has been made in the condition of Church Music in this country during the past few years. Choral services have increased, the dignity of Church worship has advanced, and a more enlightened appreciation of what is highest and best in ecclesiastical music is everywhere manifest. This book provides for the wants of all grades of choirs, and it will be found useful not only in the mission field, but also in the developed city parish. A feature of the work is the ample variety of music for the Office of Holy Communion, and it is hoped that this will contribute to the growth of choral communion services throughout the country.
