This book explores the relationship between the capacity and phase difference of paraffined paper condensers as functions of temperature and frequency through a series of detailed measurements and observations. The author conducted a set of experiments at two frequencies, 33 and 100 cycles per second, and at temperatures ranging from 10° to 35° in steps of 5° to examine the effects of external resistance on the condenser. A second set of measurements were recorded at 100, 300, 600, and 900 to 1000 cycles, and at temperatures of 10°, 25°, and 35°. The book examines various theories of absorption, including Maxwell's theory of a heterogeneous dielectric, Houllevigue's theory of frictional resistance, Pellat's theory, and von Schweidler's modified Pellat theory. The author concludes that Maxwell's theory, with some modification to account for the effects of temperature and frequency, provides the best explanation for the observed behavior of paraffined paper condensers.
