This pamphlet is designed to accompany the book entitled, Causeries avec mes 616ves. Here is the preface of the work. 4( The book that I am to-day publishing has been often solicited of me by my pupils. It is dedicated to them as a souvenir of our pleasant intercourse. They were before my eyes while I was writing, and I have heard them answering and questioning me. Nor is it exactly a book: in that is its character and its value. It is nothing but a simple conversation vividly put upon paper, and which has almost retained its gestures. My pupils will see me in reading it, as I have seen them in composing it. I converse there only with this little company, charming and select, curious to know every thing in the world of ideas, of things, and of literature.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This fascinating foray into the world of language learning upends traditional methods and recounts the author's successful experience teaching French through conversation alone, without the use of grammar or dictionaries. The author positions his approach against centuries of rote teaching and argues that true fluency arises from immersion and interaction, not memorization of rules. Readers will gain insights into the history of language instruction, from Socrates' discussions to Montaigne's skepticism about the value of formal grammar. The author's anecdotes and lucid explanations shed light on the nuances of the French language, while also offering a broader perspective on the nature of language and communication. They explore the expressive power of gesture, the inadequacy of English-based grammars for teaching French, and the importance of recognizing the beauty and elegance inherent in language. Ultimately, this book serves as an invaluable guide for language learners and teachers alike, proving that the joy of conversation and the mastery of a foreign tongue can be attained through a natural and engaging approach.
