Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book examines the history and morphology of Indo-European roots and sufixes used to form verbs. The author presents a comprehensive account of the forms of declension and conjugation, and little more. He covers not only the results of the different developments, but even now as far as possible traces their course. Thus the work will grow; and thus it comes about that the size of the latter part is so greatly out of proportion to that of the former. The author has however not touched the newest theories upon Ablaut, proethnic Accent, formation of Roots and Sufixes, and other such matters. In this volume, however, he has practically not touched the newest speculations and theories. He confines himself to exhibiting the facts and problems of language in connected form. And though he now as ever calls attention to the various problems which await an answer, and declares himself for one or other of them, adding therewithal other and many new views and explanations, he yet far from believing that he has placed beyond all doubt the view which he has preferred. The work does not in the least aspire to be a compendious history of the new school of philology, or to display the part each of us has taken in the gathering of the spoil. Where reference is made in the text to the works of other scholars, this is done for practical ends and no other. In these last two volumes the author has had from Thurneysen the same generous and ready help as before in all that refers to Keltic.
