Discover how the Weston cell’s temperature behavior was unraveled and measured This book examines the development and verification of the Weston cell temperature formula, showing how researchers tested many cells across a wide range of temperatures to understand stability and deviations.
This work focuses on the methodology, key findings, and the practical implications for precision electrical standards. It highlights how temperature, amalgam composition, and hysteresis influence electromotive force, and how later researchers refined the formula to improve reliability in standard cells.
Ideal for readers of metrology, electrical standards, and the history of scientific measurement, this edition sheds light on the careful work behind dependable reference cells.

The study was undertaken due to the Weston cell having previously demonstrated a highly accurate and reproducible electromotive force. The author reviews the prior work on standard cells and temperature coefficients, focusing on the Weston cell with excess cadmium sulfate crystals. Recognizing irregularities in previous research, the author measured 200 cells in two automatically regulated petroleum baths over a complete cycle from 0° to 40°C. The results were used to calculate corrections to the coefficients of a trial formula, resulting in a highly accurate three-term formula to calculate the Weston cell's temperature formula. Through this research, the Weston cell is confirmed as a reliable and reproducible standard cell with a maximum electromotive force at 39°C.
