In presenting this volume on Exodontia it is the aim of the author to submit a more extensive treatise on this subject than has heretofore been published. This effort to prepare a book that is comprehensive has been stimulated largely by the fact that Only brief reference to this important subject occurs in works on operative dentistry. It has been the plan to limit the scope of the book to the subject of extraction, with an endeavor to treat that feature in a manner so complete and practical as to fully meet the requirements of the exodontist, general practitioner, and dental student.

The rapid and appreciable progress that has been made in dentistry in recent years is an indication that indefatigable scientific research in this profession has been instrumental in improving the technic of operation in the various branches of this calling, and the technic of extracting a tooth from its sup porting tissues has advanced at least equally with that of the other branches. The advancement made in Exodontia has been the means of reducing tentative methods of operating to a sys tem, and has thus established definite methods of procedure for the various cases.

In treating the subject of Exodontia it has been the intention to prescribe methods of operation that, with such slight changes in the technic of procedure as the peculiar condition of an nu usual case may indicate, will be applicable to any case that may be presented, as it is impossible to establish an immutable rule to be followed in all cases.
