Synopsis

Charting the path of early Christian spirituality across the ancient world

A clear, accessible survey of how monks, hermits, and lay believers pursued holiness from the time of Christ to the beginnings of the Middle Ages. This edition examines ascetic practices, the growth of monastic life in the East and West, and the teaching that shaped Christian perfection.

Pierre Pourrat presents a concise, coaligned view of spiritual life in early Christianity. It covers the aims of ascetic effort, the evolution of monastic rules, and the role of Mary and the Virginity ideal in shaping devotion. The book balances historical development with practical reflections on prayer, fasting, obedience, and the longing for God that guided generations of believers.

This work helps readers understand how different monastic families and schools exist within a single, shared framework of Christian perfection. It highlights the variety of paths people chose to live out their faith, from solitary eremitism to organized monastic life, and it traces the influences that shaped Western and Eastern spirituality alike.

  • How early ascetics defined perfection and the role of mortification

  • The spread of monastic life in the East and the West, including key rules and figures

  • Connections between prayer, contemplation, and daily discipline

  • The development of Marian devotion and the place of virginity in Christian spirituality

Ideal for readers of church history and spiritual practice who want a concise overview of early spiritual life and its lasting impact.

Early Christian writers certainly did not distinguish asceticism from mysticism, and the word mysticism is not usually employed by them as defined in the text above. But they knew well that extraordinary states were the privilege of a few only. Men of letters and philosophers use the word mystical in a. Totally different sense from that of the theologians - zla, for very religious.
