Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book chronicles the history and schism of the Baptist denomination in the 19th century, primarily in Southern Illinois. The author, an eyewitness to the events, provides a detailed account of the division between Regular Baptists and United Baptists, revealing the underlying theological and practical differences that led to their separation. At the heart of the divide was a fundamental disagreement: Regular Baptists adhered strictly to the doctrines outlined in the original Articles of Faith, opposing the introduction of modern missionary societies and other human-led initiatives. United Baptists, on the other hand, embraced these innovations, along with Arminian theological views. The author traces the gradual divergence between these two groups, culminating in the formation of the separate Bethel Association by United Baptists and the continuation of the Muddy River Association by Regular Baptists. The book not only documents the historical events surrounding the division but also delves into the broader significance of the conflict, exploring the contrasting principles and beliefs that shaped each faction. It sheds light on the enduring tensions between traditionalism and progressivism within religious communities, and underscores the importance of adhering to core values amid the changing landscape of faith.
