When, some few years ago, it became necessary to revise theE nglish Edition of the late Prof. Prantl sL ehrhuch der Botanik it appeared to me that the requirements of English students would be more satisfactorily metif the scope of the work were so extended that, whilst retaining all that has made it of value to beginners, it might be more useful to those engaged in the advanced study of the science. With this object in view, the number of pages has been doubled by additions to all four parts of the book, but more especially toP art III. dealing with the Classification of Plants. Though the form of Prof. Prantl sbook is still retained, and here and there paragraphs from theE nglish edition have been inserted, the present is essentially a new and distinct work for which I alone am responsible, and, consequently, on the title-page of which my name alone appears. I would most gratefully acknowledge the assistance which I have received from my friend Dr. D. H. Scott, F.E..S., Honorary Keeper of the Jodrell Laboratory, Royal Gardens, Kew, who has kindly read the proofs, and has furnished me with many valuable suggestions and criticisms. The usefulness of the book is enhanced by the incorporation of a number of additional illustrations: most of these are placed at my disposal by the publishers, from their English edition of Prof. Strasburger sP ractical Botany, a few are taken from various other sources which are duly acknowledged. Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book investigates the classification of plants. The author introduces the reader to the basic structures present in plants and the diverse range of lifeforms that exist in the plant kingdom. The text then goes on to explain how these plants are classified into groups based on their shared characteristics, such as the type of seeds they produce, the structure of their flowers and leaves, and their growth patterns. The author explores the history of plant classification, from the early ideas of natural philosophers to the development of modern taxonomic systems. The book also reviews the latest research in plant systematics and discusses some of the challenges that lie ahead in understanding the diversity of plant life on Earth. The author argues that a deep understanding of plant classification is essential not only for the study of botany but also for addressing global issues such as climate change and food security.
