Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. In the mid-19th century, a group of scientists worked tirelessly to establish the Girard College magnetic observatory in Philadelphia, aiming to better understand the Earth's magnetic fields. This book is an exploration of the series of magnetic and meteorological observations made at Girard College between 1840 and 1845, a period that significantly contributed to the emerging field of geomagnetism. The author takes the reader through the process of analysing the solar diurnal variation in the magnetic declination, its amplitude, and the disturbances to which it was subjected. The author examines the eleven-year period in the change of the amplitude of magnetic variation and establishes a precise epoch for the occurrence of its minimum. The author concludes by examining the annual and diurnal inequality of disturbances in the magnetic declination, finding both positive and negative disturbances tend to balance each other out by the end of the day.
