These laws reflect the political, economic, and social realities of Scotland in the early 1600s and give insights into the government's attempt to resolve the severe issue of a lack of currency. Introduced by contextual information on the scarcity of money in the kingdom, the book includes early 17th century Acts of Parliament, Acts of the Privy Council, and miscellaneous records. Among the topics addressed in these records are the value of different coins, limits on their exportation, and various proposed remedies for the shortage of currency, including a proposition to establish societies and manufactories in major towns and cities to produce goods for import. The Acts also contain a fascinating record of an attempt to raise the prices of coins - a policy the government ultimately rejected, along with various proposals to resolve the severe lack of currency in the kingdom. The author concludes that these documents offer significant insights into early modern Scottish monetary policy.
