Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book recounts the life of musician Sadie Knowland Coe, a woman who dedicated her life to music and spreading knowledge of it to others, even in China, where she spent time as a missionary. Born into a family of religious and musical influence, she distinguished herself as an accomplished pianist at a young age, eventually studying under some of the greats of her time. Her love of music extended beyond performance to the study of music history, theory, and composition. As an authority on music, she offered lecture-recitals and courses to women's clubs, founded music departments in several organizations, and composed her own melodrama titled "Hiawatha." Through her various roles as performer, teacher, composer, and lecturer, she helped to shape the musical landscape of the late 19th and early 20th century, particularly in the Evanston, Illinois area, where she spent much of her career.
