HiKG that exists has its origin in the past. It is therefore quite esseutial, before touching upon the events of any remarkable mans life, that we should take a retrospective glaiu at the circumstances in which his career originated. I pur)O se, then, to give here a rapid preliminary sketch of the prominent events that occurred in I taly, and especially in Piedmont Graribaldrs native soil between the years 1820 and 1S34, before introducing him to the reader to tell his story in his own words :observing that his narrative wiU commence from this latter date. The course of the wars which followed the outbreak of the great French Bevolution had sent into banish- ment, in the island of Sardinia, two princes, who, on emerging from their protracted exile at the close of the war, were no longer young. These two princes, who were brothers, were the last surviving male representatives of the direct line of theD ukes of Savoy. One was Yictor Emmanuel, and the other Charles Felix, each of whom was destined to ascend the throne of the newly-constituted kingdom of Sardinia. The younger branch of this house was then represented by Charles A lbert, Prince deC arignan, who in 1S23 served as a grenadier in the French army daring theS panish campaign, and on which occasion he greatly distinguished himself by his personal courage, particularly at the attack of the Trocadero.

This book tells the story of a remarkable life, tracing the journey of a man who rose from humble origins to become a pivotal figure in the Italian Risorgimento, the movement for Italian unification. The author, in addition to sharing the protagonist's personal experiences, provides a richly detailed historical background of the Italian political landscape during the early 19th century, setting the stage for the protagonist's dramatic and often dangerous involvement in shaping the future of Italy. From the authorââ â¢s perspective, the period between 1820 and 1834 was particularly turbulent, marked by a complex web of political movements, secret societies, and foreign interventions. The book delves into the rise of Carbonarism, a powerful secret society striving for Italian independence, as well as the activities of other influential groups like the Illuminati and Freemasons. This book explores the tension between revolutionary fervor and the realities of power, as we see the protagonist navigating the treacherous waters of both political intrigue and the open sea. Through its compelling narrative and insightful historical analysis, this book illuminates the intricate struggles of a man whose courage, commitment to liberty, and unwavering faith in his countryââ â¢s destiny would contribute to the unification of Italy.
