Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is an important report presenting the history and work of the first three Lighthouses for the Blind established during the First World War. The organization was founded in France by the Committee for Men Blinded in Battle and the Comità Franco-Amà ricain pour les Aveugles de la Guerre, under the patronage of the President of the French Republic and Ambassador of the United States to France. This incredible work in the annals of rehabilitation began in 1915 with a single American volunteer in Bordeaux, France, and quickly grew into an international beacon of hope for blinded soldiers. By 1918, there were three Lighthouses in France and two in the United States, which taught the newly blind valuable skills so they might regain their independence and re-enter society with pride. This book is a fascinating primary source for the history of blindness rehabilitation and shines a light on the tremendous contribution of the blind community to the war effort and to society as a whole.
