Excerpt from Exercises in Mind-Training: In Quickness of Perception, Concentrated Attention and Memory
This book is intended to provide for busy teach ers the exercises which I have formulated and used for the growth and development of those mental powers most needful to the student in acquiring knowledge-material - via, Quickness of Percep tion, Concentrated Attention, and Memory.
I am aware that the end for which this book is written will not be attained without enthusiasm on the part of the teacher. It was written of Agassiz: His power over his pupils might be measured by his own enthusiasm. Even his vast learning was not the measure of his power - it was his exhaustless enthusiasm.

Written by a teacher of the late 19th century, the book draws heavily on the ideas of the pedagogical movement that was then gaining momentum. The author argues that students, with the proper training, can acquire remarkable abilities in areas such as memory, attention, and perception. The book offers a series of exercises, designed to be delivered by teachers, to strengthen these abilities. These exercises utilize various tools including blackboards, written lists, and even music. The book explores the relationship between learning and mental agility, suggesting that by cultivating the mind's inherent powers, one can become a more effective and receptive learner. The exercises, many of which involve visual perception and rapid recall, are intended to train the mind to grasp information quickly and retain it accurately. Through a combination of visual and auditory drills, the author proposes a path towards more effective learning. The book's insights into mental training and the importance of actively engaging with the learning process, remain relevant even today, providing valuable lessons for educators and students alike.
