The book provides historical context and analysis of the law, and includes a record of its victims as compiled by the author. The Fugitive Slave Law was a controversial law that allowed slave owners to pursue and reclaim escaped slaves in free states, and its passage significantly heightened tensions between the North and South in the years leading up to the American Civil War. The book includes an alphabetical listing of the names of Northern men who voted for the law, as well as the names of those who voted against it, conveniently organized for the reader's reference. The author asserts that the law was a cruel kidnapping scheme and provides a series of accounts of individuals who were victims of the law. These accounts provide a glimpse into the harsh realities of slavery and the lengths to which slave owners would go to reclaim their "property." The book concludes with an impassioned call for the repeal of the law and for an end to the evils of slavery.
