This book offers the results of tests and analysis performed by the author on 14 locomotive water columns, which are devices used to deliver water to the tanks of steam locomotives. The tests were conducted in partnership with the American Railway Engineering and Maintenance of Way Association in order to gather data on the hydraulic properties of water columns. Since little definitive information was previously available, engineers responsible for designing water service plants had been working 'in the dark'. The data in this book gives those same engineers valuable reference points for calculating head loss. Furthermore, the author offers principles of water hammer and its application to a water service installation, as well as a discussion of relief valves.
