Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book presents the results of field studies investigating dissolved oxygen (DO) levels in spawning areas of pink and chum salmon in various Alaskan streams. The author developed an inexpensive and reliable method for measuring DO levels in intragravel water, using special standpipes inserted into the streambed. The author performed systematic and random sampling to analyze DO variations, identifying significant differences between sample areas and across seasons and years. The research revealed that DO levels in spawning gravels can fluctuate greatly, with the lowest levels observed during periods of low streamflow and warm weather. These low DO levels were associated with higher salmon embryo mortality. The findings highlight the potential importance of environmental factors such as dissolved oxygen on the survival of salmon embryos.
