This book presents a series of papers originally presented at the joint meetings of several mining institutes held over a period of years, each paper followed by relevant discussions. Beginning with the introduction of electric lighting in mines, the book discusses spontaneous combustion in mines and the testing of signaling apparatus. In its later contributions, it moves on to discuss the technical aspects of coal mining in Northumberland during the early years of the 20th century, including the exploration for and winning of coal deposits. The author's stated goal is to place these subjects before the mining community and by publishing them in book form to make them more widely available.
