Ladies and Gentlemen: Some time ago a professor of one of our Western Universities compared the genius of John D. Rockefeller with the genius of Shakespeare. As I recall the comparison, Shakespeare had none the best of it. I mention this fact to point the tendency of modern hero-worship. The man of interest today, the man who stirs the pulse of emulation and challenges attention, is the Captain of I ndustry; and a lycean subject such as Andrew Carnegie, for example, his wealth, methods, industrial triumphs and splendid public gifts would doubtless make a wide and popular appeal. But I am not going to talk about Andrew Carnegie. I have chosen another Scotchman, a man thriftless, intemperate, immoral if you insist, a man who lived in debt and died at 37, cursing an importunate creditor. j And, yet this man was a benefactor of his race, and the legacy he bequeathed the world shall be treasured and enjoyed when Carnegie is forgotten and when all his gifts have perished in the oblivious dust.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is a celebration and exploration of the literary genius of Robert Burns, a Scottish poet who lived from 1759 to 1796. The author gives Burns his full due as a writer and humanitarian, showing how his ability to write movingly about love, loss, and revolution made him one of the most important poets in British history. Drawing meaningful connections between Burns' body of work and the rich tapestry of Scottish culture, the author demonstrates what made Burns so revolutionary for his time, particularly regarding his perspective on class and his championship of egalitarianism. Among his many achievements, Burns's gift of language contributed significantly to the development of an independent, specifically Scottish voice in literature. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in the life and work of this inspiring poet, and a valuable resource for understanding his contributions to literature and the Scottish soul.
