Excerpt from Ornamental Design: Embracing the Anatomy of Pattern; The Planning of Ornament, the Application of Ornament
There was a time in my own struggling for artistic existence, when I should have been so grateful for any practical teaching in orna ment, that I fancy there must be students who will find it helpful to have set plainly before them what I have had to puzzle out for myself. Hence this series of Text Books of Ornamental Design; in which I have amplified and illustrated the substance of a series of Cantor Lectures delivered in December last before the Society of Arts.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating world of ornamental design, taking readers on a journey through the intricate structures that underpin seemingly complex patterns. The author, drawing upon their own experiences as a designer, breaks down the process of pattern creation into its fundamental elements, revealing the geometric frameworks that lie beneath the surface of countless decorative motifs. Through detailed explanations and accompanying illustrations, the author guides readers through a diverse array of pattern types, from simple stripes and checks to more elaborate latticework and intricate curvilinear designs. The book explores the historical origins of pattern construction, tracing the evolution of design principles from primitive techniques like plaiting and weaving to the more sophisticated patterns found in Byzantine mosaics and Moorish tilework. The author emphasizes the importance of understanding the geometric basis of pattern, comparing this knowledge to a figure draughtsman's understanding of anatomy. The bookââ â¢s core argument lies in the revelation that pattern design, despite its apparent complexity, is ultimately governed by a limited number of underlying structural principles. This book offers invaluable insights into the creation of repeating patterns, making it a valuable resource for anyone interested in the theory and practice of ornamental design.
