Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book undertakes a thorough examination of the so-called 'fluctuation of attention' phenomena, in which minimal stimuli are observed to appear and disappear in rhythmic fashion. The author argues that these fluctuations are not due to variations in attention as was originally proposed, but rather to intermittent adaptation of the visual system. Adaptation, which is normally continuous, is shown to become intermittent under certain conditions. These include appropriate variations in the size and intensity of the stimulus, as well as involuntary eye movements. The author shows how the periodic disappearance of stimuli that results from intermittent adaptation accounts for a range of other effects previously attributed to attention. In so doing, this book offers a more complete and accurate understanding of the nature of attention.
