Frederick Law Olmsted and Mr. John C. Olmsted ;to the editors of theN ew York Tribune ;and to the many other individuals who have permitted her to quote their utterances or writings, or have extended other courtesies expressive of sympathy with this work. The plan of the work, which confines the architectural review chiefly to one chapter, has made it impossible to place the drawings in direct relation to the text. They are distributed therefore through the book approximately in chronological order. Large commercial buildings prove stubborn subjects for illustration in little. The stern Monadnock, for example, so resists every effort to reduce its proportions effectively that in these pages no drawing of it has been attempted.
