St. Albans: From Verulamium to Abbey is a concise illustrated guide to the city’s long history, its landmarks, and how preservation has shaped today’s town.
This book traces Verulamium’s rise from a Roman center to the medieval abbey town of St. Albans, then follows the modern town’s development. It highlights major sites, from the Abbey and shrines to Sopwell Nunnery and the Clock Tower, and explains how restorations and discoveries illuminate the past.

Excerpt from Gibbs' Illustrated Handbook to St. Albans: Containing a Sketch of Its History, and a Description of Its Abbey, Its Antiquities, and Other Objects of Interest
The present Edition of the Handbook has been care fully revised, and the information it contains brought down to the present time, I trust it may not prove less acceptable than the preceding Editions. The portion which forms a Guide to the Abbey has again been kept distinct from the rest' of the work, to facilitate its publication in a separate form for the use of visitors, and I have endeavoured to make it as complete as the limits of the space assigned to it will permit. I have to make especial acknowledgment of the kind and ready help I have received, from Mr. John Chapple, who has materially lessened for me the difficulty of preparing, while living at a distance from St. Albans, a new Edition for the Press.

This book engagingly chronicles the saga of St Albans Abbey, from its humble beginnings following the martyrdom of Saint Alban through its turbulent medieval heyday to its ultimate dissolution during the English Reformation. Set against the rich backdrop of English history, the text delves into the Abbey's pivotal role in shaping the religious, political, and cultural landscape of the nation. Through meticulous research and vivid prose, the author brings alive key figures like King Offa, credited with founding the Abbey, and Abbot John of Wheathamstead, who navigated the perilous waters of the Wars of the Roses. The book explores the Abbey's transformation from a simple shrine to an opulent Benedictine monastery, and its influence on the lives of its inhabitants, from pious monks to powerful abbots. It sheds light on the complex relationship between the Abbey and the town of St Albans, and the impact of the Reformation on both institutions. The author deftly weaves together historical accounts, architectural descriptions, and social commentary to provide a comprehensive and captivating account of this remarkable institution.
