Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book uncovers the lost world of medieval figure-sculpture in England. Starting by addressing misconceptions about how medieval sculptors operated and gaining an understanding of the personal significance of gure-sculpture to Gothic art, this book takes the reader on a journey that examines the artistic merits and evolution of figure-sculpture across three periods of Gothic architecture. In each section, illustrations and expert commentary explore the changing styles and rich symbolism of this era, shedding light on the development of Gothic buildings and the social, religious, and political movements that shaped them. While showcasing the achievements of early Gothic sculpture, the author also highlights the evolution from its Romanesque origins through to the development of distinct architectural uses of the figure in label-heads, corbel figures, bosses, reliefs, statues, and effigies.
