Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is an assembly of letters and sketches written by the author during an 1858 European tour. After departing New York, the traveler experiences seasickness then sights a whale and a lost bird before encountering a chalk ritual at sea and a steeplechase on deck. Arriving in Ireland, the author travels to Liverpool to view the docks before continuing to London, where monuments and cathedrals are inspected. The journey continues through the Thames Tunnel to the Tower of London and then to the Crystal Palace and British Museum. From there, it's on to France, where the sights of Paris, including the Arc de Triomphe, Bois de Boulogne, and the tomb of Napoleon are described. PÃ re la Chaise cemetery is found to be less impressive than its American counterparts. The author concludes by noting the historical and literary figures buried at PÃ re la Chaise, and the significance of the insights the book provides on these individuals and the places visited.
