A sharp, thoughtful exchange about religious history and historical writing.
This edition presents Belsham’s letters that question how Dr. Priestley’s views are represented and challenged by a correspondent.
The discussion centers on early Christian doctrine, the development of the Trinity, and how beliefs were interpreted by ancient and later writers. It investigates sources, quotations, and the reliability of historical summaries, all aimed at a clear, careful assessment of contested facts. The edition invites readers to weigh arguments, evidence, and the role of interpretation in religious history.Les informations fournies dans la section « Synopsis » peuvent faire référence à une autre édition de ce titre.

John Pye Smith. The author, while acknowledging Smith's erudition and civil demeanor, nevertheless takes issue with Smith's description of Calvinism, a religious system the author considers to be extremely harsh and even pernicious despite its popularity among many pious and sincere Christians. The author alleges that Smith has misrepresented the true tenets of Calvinism, which the author asserts is not a unified system but rather a variety of doctrines commonly held together by adherents who hold that they receive everlasting salvation only through the grace of God. The author argues that true Calvinism, as expounded by its founder, John Calvin, includes the doctrine of double predestination, which declares that God has foreordained some people for salvation and others for eternal punishment from all eternity. The author contends that this doctrine is both repugnant to any just conception of a loving God and also is not supported by scripture, which the author holds is the ultimate authority for Christian doctrine. The author claims that this system of belief has historically led to persecution and misery and that it is unjust to hold Priestley responsible for any negative consequences that have resulted from the extreme forms of Calvinism. The author concludes by highlighting Priestley's many contributions to science, education, and religion and suggests that his legacy should be judged on its own merits rather than through the lens of a distorted understanding of his theological views.
