Excerpt from Distant Lands: An Elementary Study in Geography
The historical thread Of the present volume is cut short near the close of the eighteenth century, ex cept in regard to geographical exploration, which is pursued into the nineteenth century in order that the physical sketch of the world's surface may include a few ideas concerning the deep ocean and the Polar regions. Existing political geography is reserved for the fourth and last volume Of the series.
Adhering as in the two preceding books to the idea that a text book should present a text, and that commentary and question can only come with vivid interest from the living teacher, I have refused to cumber my pages with an apparatus of notes and exercises which, so far as I remember my boyhood, made school books repellent.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book takes readers on an enthralling journey through the development of geographical knowledge, exploring how ancient civilizations, like the Greeks and Romans, gradually mapped and understood the world around them. Through the lens of historical accounts, the book reveals the crucial role of exploration, observation, and measurement in shaping early understandings of the Earth's shape, size, and continents. The author masterfully intertwines the history of geographical discovery with the evolution of geographical theory. Readers will learn how the Greeks, through their advancements in astronomy, geometry, and seafaring, developed crucial concepts like latitude and longitude, and eventually arrived at the understanding that the Earth is a globe. The book highlights the ingenuity of early geographers like Eratosthenes, who, without modern instruments, remarkably estimated the size of the Earth with only a small margin of error. By tracing the development of geographical knowledge, the book underscores how civilization's understanding of the world is fundamentally tied to its capacity for exploration, measurement, and the pursuit of scientific inquiry.
