Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book explores the inheritance of characters in maize plants, based on extensive pedigree culture work. At the start of the 20th century, the author re-examined the principles of Gregor Mendel through experiments with maize and its various forms. Unlike Gregor Mendel's pea plant experiments, maize presented considerably more variables, making the analysis of the results a more complex process. Nevertheless, the author's findings supported Mendel's principles of heredity while shedding light on additional concepts relating to inheritance and genetic variation. The author discusses unit characters, allelomorphic pairs, complex characters, and the behavior of these units in heredity. Extensive data gathered from the study of various maize characters â" including starchiness, yellow endosperm, aleurone color, podded and podless maize, pericarp color, cob color, silk color, glume color, red sap color, size dimensions, number of rows, and heights of plants, among others â" is presented and analyzed to support the author's conclusions. The book also examines abnormal plant forms and provides a broader analysis of the nature of plant variation and the principles of inheritance. This book provides valuable insights into genetics, particularly for those interested in plant breeding and the history of genetics.
