Excerpt from A Contribution to the Study of the Nature and Origin of the Bence Jones Protein
This study is a continuation of the preliminary work by Ottenberg and Gies who found in this laboratory that crude elastose, after its subcutaneous or intraperitoneal injection, can readily be detected in the urine by the heat precipitation test. Since the Bence Jones protein has various properties in common with elastoses, Ottenberg and Gies suggested that osseoalbumoid (bone elastin might be the forerunner of the Bence Jones protein, which appears in the urine of people with multiple myeloma of the bones. It was thought that perhaps the osseoalbumoid of the bone might be so acted upon by the enzymes present in the cells of the myelomatous growth, as to give rise to a body having the properties of the Bence Jones protein.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is a study of a protein, called Bence Jones protein, which is excreted in the urine of people with certain bone marrow disorders. The author begins by reviewing the history of the discovery of this protein and its association with multiple myeloma, a type of bone cancer. The author then discusses the possible causes of Bence Jones proteinuria, focusing on the theory that it is produced by the action of enzymes released by the abnormal cells in the bone marrow. The author also discusses the various theories about the composition and structure of Bence Jones protein and explores the possibility that it is related to other proteins in the body, such as serum globulin. Finally, the author presents the results of his own experiments, in which he injected products of the enzymatic digestion of bone marrow into dogs and observed the effects on their urine. The author concludes that his results support the theory that Bence Jones protein is produced by the action of enzymes on bone marrow proteins and that it is excreted in the urine as a waste product of this process. This book provides a comprehensive overview of the current state of knowledge about Bence Jones protein and its role in multiple myeloma. It is a valuable resource for researchers and clinicians interested in this topic.
