A primary goal of the authors was to test and define the accuracy of a method developed by Powell and Parr for analyzing forms of coal sulfur. They then expanded those parameters to test several different types of coal to determine the applicability of this new method to various grades of coal. The method was found to be highly accurate for pyritic sulfur and organic sulfur and fairly accurate for sulfate sulfur when properly checked, and the book includes three methods for analyzing sulfur forms in coal, depending on the desired depth of analysis. This process of coal sulfur analysis is a relatively new field of study, with most prior methods being either inaccurate or incomplete. This book serves as a useful guide to an increasingly important field of study, offering substantial new information on the make-up of different coal types.
