The author looks at a magnetohydrodynamic equilibrium with flow, using this case to frame the discussion of a crucial energy principle and local instability. The author builds off an earlier work by Bernstein, et al. who provided a necessary and sufficient condition for the stability of static systems. This book expands on that work by considering a non-static system and identifying that unstable eigenmodes can only accumulate at the point of overlap of the Alfven and cusp continua. It then develops both necessary and sufficient conditions for local stability. By defining a "generalized Suydam condition," the author's work significantly enhances our understanding of plasma stability.
