Présentation de l'éditeur

This little book is intended for those college students of geology who have not at hand for immediate reference the more extensive works on petrology or minerogy, or easy access to greater dictionaries and encyclopoedias. The terms defined relate only to the common rocks and rock minerals, such as are studied in the first two years of the college course, but are most of them omitted from our students or collegiate dictionaries; and several of them that have already been used for nearly a decade are not yet in the largest dictionaries, though they have found a place in all our standard text books. To the student who wishes to fill in some of the details of the mere outlines presented in this booklet, no better book can be recommended than. Rocks and Rock Minerals. By Louis V. Pirsson, 1909. Many excellent illustrations from photographs, and 414 pages. New York: John Wiley and Sons. He will also find especially useful AH andbook ot Rocks. By James Purman Kemp. 1911. New York: D. Van Nostrand Company. Other books that will be consulted frequently by the more advanced student are Quantitative Classification of Igneous Rocks, by Cross, I ddings, Pirsson, and Washington (1903), Igneous Rocks, vol. i, (1909)1 vo Lii, (1913), Rock Minerals, (1906), by J. P. I ddings, and Natural History of the Igneous Rocks, by A. Harker,
