From its earliest forms in the Necturus maculosus to the development of a chiridial appendage, this book examines the evolution of terrestrial vertebrates with a particular focus on the human hand. Though the limbs of higher vertebrates have evolved substantially over time, the author asserts that there are still many indications of our humble beginnings. The author, a professor at Smith College, attempts to trace the development of the vertebrate hand and human foot, using the Necturus as a model, and argues that there are recognizable similarities that have been retained throughout evolution. The book employs descriptive language, certain diagrams, and photographic plates to help the reader visualize these similarities, and the author goes into great detail describing various muscles of the Necturus's limbs that are homologous to muscles in the human hand and foot. The author suggests that this analysis can teach us about both the history of evolution and about the body's current structure, and the book will be of interest to students of anatomy, zoology, evolutionary biology, and natural history.
