Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is a study of the distribution of iodine in thyroid cells and colloid in thyroid glands. The author describes a method for separating thyroid cells from colloid material and examining them chemically, and uses this method to compare the iodine content of cells and whole gland in normal and iodine-fed dogs as well as in human glands obtained from individuals subjected to surgery for toxic goiter. The author finds that the ratio of iodine concentration in cells to iodine concentration in whole gland is fairly constant despite variations in morphology and iodine content, and that this ratio is not altered by the feeding of iodine or iodine compounds over periods of time ranging from 3 days to 3 weeks. The author also discusses the effect of stimulating the vago-sympathetic nerve on the distribution and concentration of iodine in the dog's thyroid gland, and finds that such stimulation does not appreciably alter either the ratio value or the concentration of iodine in the whole gland. The book provides valuable insights into the metabolism of iodine in the thyroid gland and the role of the vago-sympathetic nerve in thyroid function.
