Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book provides a critical examination of the secretory-nerve theory of glandular secretion, a long-held tenet of physiology since Ludwig's proposal in the 19th century. The author challenges the idea that secretion is controlled by the activity of gland cells innervated by specific nerve fibers. Instead, the author presents evidence that secretions are driven out of the cells by the action of muscle, as in amphibian skin glands and sudoriferous glands, or by currents of lymph, which are probably the result of osmosis, as in the pancreas, stomach, or salivary glands. The author concludes that there is no single mechanism of secretion and that different mechanisms may coexist in one gland. This work is significant in its reevaluation of the established secretory-nerve theory and its implications for understanding the physiology of secretion.
