At our interview last night I gathered you had reached the conclusion that my retention of the post of Secretary to the Labour Party was no longer compatible with my membership of the War Cabinet. Recent experiences have impressed me with the em harrassing complications arising from this duality of office. In these circumstances, therefore, I deem it advisable to ask you to release me from further membership of your Government.
