The Yankees were primarily from New England and New York, while the Germans originated from southern and southwestern regions, as well as Eastern European countries. The author analyzes the different approaches each group took to farming. The Yankees favored open land and were quick to bring in new technologies, such as canals and railroads. The Germans, on the other hand, preferred forested areas and were more cautious in their adoption of new practices. The book demonstrates that the distribution of the two groups was largely determined by the availability of desired farmland.
