9781334452093: An Introduction to Political Parties and Practical Politics (Classic Reprint)

Synopsis

An accessible introduction to how political parties work and shape government. This edition lays out what a party is, how platforms guide policy, and how campaigns and elections influence the political landscape.

Designed as a textbook, it emphasizes clarity and practical understanding over exhaustive detail. It shows how parties organize, nominate candidates, run campaigns, and respond to public issues, with examples drawn from early 20th‑century American politics. The focus is on present‑day national parties, their methods, and the politics that touch everyday civic life.

  • Learn the core features that define a political party and how organization sustains it.

  • Understand nominating methods, conventions, primaries, and campaign strategies.

  • Explore the evolution of election laws, voting technology, and the role of publicity in politics.

  • See how party platforms and public policy debates shape legislative action and reform efforts.

Ideal for students and general readers seeking a clear, structured primer on how parties influence political life and practical politics.

Présentation de l'éditeur

This book has a very modest purpose. As the title states, it is designed as an Introduction to the study of political parties and practical politics. It is primarily intended to serve as a text-book. Therefore, no attempt has been made to make it encyclopaedic in scope or exhaustive in its treatment of topics. Suggestiveness and condensation have been kept constantly in mind during its preparation. A fuller treatment of a few topics has seemed wise on account of their importance or the nature of the materials available for student use. Somewhat extended lists of references are to be found at the ends of chapters, together with suggested questions and topics. These may be used in different ways: as the basis for collateral reading, for reports before the class; or, where a large library is not at hand, they may be made the basis of a series of lectures and informal discussions. It is believed that the plan of the work is sufficiently elastic to be adaptable to both large and small classes in both large and small institutions. The plan is the outgrowth of several years experience in conducting large classes having access to a comparatively small library.
