It is universally acknowledged that a chemical operation presents two aspects to the investigator; it involves a change in the form or distribution of matter, and a change in the form or distribution of energy. The greater number of the chemical text-books pay very little heed to the latter of these changes. Indeed it is only within recent years that any serious attempt has been made to measure the changes of energy which accompany chemical changes of matter. Such measurements, so far as they have yet gone, have been almost wholly confined to determinations of the quantities of heat which enter or leave a chemical system during its passage from one definite state to another. A ny exact applications which can at present be made of the laws of energy to chemical processes must then, for the most part, be based on the results of thermo-chemical investigation. This book-is intended to present a connected account of the methods and results of the most important researches which have been made inT hermal Chemistry. It does not in any way pretend to be an exhaustive treatise on the subject; its object is to deal with principles, and methods of investigation.
