Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is a collection of periodical essays written in the 18th century by various authors, published under the name Walter Weathercock, Esq. A true literary gem, this book introduces readers to a man of excellent humor, whose wit both makes you laugh and think. Each essay was intended to have appeared weekly, but times had changed since "The World" and "The Connoisseur" made regular appearances 30 years prior. The author himself acknowledges this and states that any attempt to revive such a mode of publication would prove unsuccessful since every essay would be "halved, or mangled, if not served up a la Minute", similar to how "The Mirror" and "The Lounger" had been cut into Scottish collops. Thus, the author consolidated several essays into one volume, offering the public a variety of dishes, mostly light and easy to digest. The author's aim was to cover an extensive range of topics in a lively, easily digestible manner, to appeal to a variety of tastes. Every effort was made to avoid hackneyed culinary allusions, while still offering a selection as varied as a petit souper. The main subject is a celebration of variety, with the author arguing that a demand for variety is the chief, and perhaps only distinction between man and brute. Many themes appear throughout the essays, including morality, wealth, literature, human nature, and experience, with the author arguing that true happiness comes from the pursuit of something rather than the end result. The book is filled with insightful observations, making it a valuable read for anyone interested in the human condition and the pursuit of a meaningful life.
