Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book investigates the correlation between social class and family size in Edwardian London. The author asks whether the reduced birth rate across the Victorian era was felt equally across society. Utilising statistical analysis of data from the 1901 census, the author shows that fertility was considerably reduced amongst professional and affluent families compared to the working class. Moreover, unlike today where these differences are largely explained by differing ages of marriage, the author shows early 20th-century differences in family size were only partially attributed to age. The book concludes that by the early 20th century, concerns about the 'quality' of new generations were well-founded, with a disproportionate number of children born into the poorest families.
