Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book examines the fumigation of apples as a method of controlling the San Jose scale, a destructive insect pest that causes reddish spots on apples and reduces their marketability. The author, an entomologist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, conducted a series of experiments in 1906-08 to test the effectiveness of hydrocyanic acid gas and carbon bisulphide in killing the scales without harming the fruit. The book details the experimental setups, results, and conclusions, which demonstrated that hydrocyanic acid gas was effective in killing the scales at various strengths and exposure times, while carbon bisulphide was not. The author also investigated the effect of different package types on the effectiveness of fumigation, finding that scales were more likely to survive in sealed barrels than in perforated barrels or open baskets. The work documented in this book contributed to the development of fumigation as a method for controlling the San Jose scale, which remains a threat to apple production today.
