Next to the XII Tables the Praetorian Edict ranks as the most important source of Roman law. In form each item in the Edict was a declaration of the Praetor that under given circumstances he would grant an action or a special defence. The perual edict was thus a collection of actions supplementing and amending the Twelve Tables.
