It traces the different ways in which this relationship has been defined and regulated over time, from the Dutch colonial period to the present day. The author argues that the criminalization of breach of contract was a necessary step in protecting employers from misconduct on the part of their servants, but that it also had the unintended consequence of creating a system of criminal justice that was often harsh and arbitrary. The book concludes by calling for a more nuanced approach to the regulation of the employer-employee relationship, one that takes into account the interests of both parties and the broader social and economic context in which they operate.
