Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book examines the seizure of the steamship Peterhoff, a British vessel headed from London to the neutral port of Matamoras, Mexico. The ship carried a manifest of general goods and six passengers, and had been cleared by customs in London with full knowledge of the authorities and customs officers. The ship's seizure in international waters by an American cruiser known as the USS Vanderbilt was purportedly due to suspicions that contraband was aboard and the ship was headed for a Confederate port when in fact the voyage was legal, and the seizure unlawful. The book traces the legal process and political maneuvering that followed, and provides historical context on the larger conflict between the Northern and Southern states of America during the US Civil War. It examines the historical and legal complexities of the event within the broader context of maritime law and international relations, demonstrating that the incident was a violation of international law, and a direct affront to British sovereignty.
